In December 2014, after having found homes for over 50 horses and burros, Family Horses needs public support to continue to grow. Our goal is to help America’s wild horses and burros find adoptive homes. Working in conjunction with the Mustang Heritage Foundation and the Humane Society of the United States gives us a unique opportunity to make a difference!
The following programs support our goal of finding horses and burros adoptive homes:
On-Site Training / Adoptions
We currently take in approximately 4-6 horses and 6-10 burros at a time for basic ground training. We advertise locally and through social media to find adoptive homes for these animals. The training process can take anywhere from 10 - 100 days. Expenses for the care of animals in training is offset through our work for the Trainer Incentive Program and the Burro Incentive Program.
Facility Inventory
At least once a month we have made an effort to visit our local holding facility and “catalog” horses and burros currently available for adoption. We provide basic information about each animal and distribute this information to viewers via Facebook Groups and our website. More exposure for wild horses and burros helps ensure that they can be seen by potential adopters who may not live in the area or have the time to visit the facility. Every visit to the BLM Facility requires not only gas but good camera equipment and hours spent processing / editing photos outside of the time spent at the facility. 100% of the expenses for this program must be obtained from donations of people like you!
Onsite Public Education
In 2014 we were proud to host a free wild horse gentling demonstration for the public. We plan to offer this clinic again in 2019. In addition, we plan on adding information about gentling / training wild burros. 100% of the expenses for this program must be obtained from donations of people like YOU!
Youth Education
We live in a somewhat rural area but are surrounded by housing tracts and low-income families who do not have access to horses or burros. We are planning to offer youth programs, including day camps, in 2020 where local youth can come learn about horses and burros, how wild horses are trained, and their history. They will be able to have hands on contact with one of our trained wild horses and burros as well as participate in simple exercises to “help” with the training of animals at our facility. The future of the horse industry lies in our youth, it is up to those active in the horse industry to make successful introductions!
Online Education
Family Horses is proud to have the first YouTube channel dedicated to videos solely depicting the training and gentling process for wild horses and burros with 500+ videos, 639 subscribers with over 45,940 video views. While posting videos to YouTube is certainly free, the equipment, software, time and skill it takes to produce them is not. 100% of the expenses for this program must be obtained from donations of people like you!
