Xcalibur

Posted by in .

Xcalibur is a 4 yo BLM buckskin dun gelding. He is 14.3 hands tall! Xcalibur was gathered from Augusta Mountains, NV HMA in February of 2011. Xcalibur is not broke to ride although with training he should make a very nice riding horse. Because of his color he can be registered with the buckskin horse registries! Update from Xcalibur’s adopters. He has been renamed “Blackfoot” since he has only one black foot! They report he’s friendly and a bit of a clown. Been pulling off people’s hats and playing games with his automatic waterer. They are hoping to start ponying him on trail soon!

April 14, 2014 – Day 14 – Xcalibur has been adopted and is settling in at his new home!!

Here is Xcalibur’s last video before he went home!

April 13, 2014 – Day 13

Worked on lots of approach and retreat. Haltering and leading practice. Everything is going very well for Xcalibur.  He’s picking up all four feet, can be haltered, leads, ties, can be saddled. Really going to make a nice horse!

April 10, 2014 – Day 10

April 9, 2014 – Day 9

Brief training session with Xcalibur today. We had some visitors to the ranch and they were able to play with him for a few minutes leading him around and getting him used to touch. He wasn’t sure at first about the “strangers” but figured it out! Was a good boy!!

April 8, 2014 – Day 8
Training Day 6

Worked with Xcalibur today on desensitization to the saddle pad, bareback pad, cinch pressure and finally the cinch. Everything went very smoothly. He wasn’t happy about the belly rope but soon figured it out. After that the bareback pad was a breeze.  We also started working on picking up his front feet. Can’t wait to try a saddle on him next!

April 6, 2014 – Day 6
Training Day 5

Training day 5 for Xcaliber was a lot of fun but we did have a couple of obstacles to overcome. This was his first day out in the open which went pretty well. He did get loose, twice, and catching him wasn’t that easy. So that was kind of frustrating but, we do remember that just five days ago he didn’t know anything about leading, or obstacle courses, or dogs appearing out of nowhere behind him at a dead run!

All in all he did a great job over the obstacles. Started with basic step overs and he was very willing to stand there and think about how to cross over the objects. The logs on the ground were initially easy to walk around, as was the bridge, but soon he understood what was being asked of him. Turned into a great learning session!

April 2, 2014 – Day 2
Training Day 2

So far Xcalibur is doing VERY well with his training. Today we took him into our 50×50 pen to lead him around. It took a little bit for him to figure out leading forward versus side to side. What worked best for him was ever expanding circles till pretty soon we were leading around the whole 50′ square pen.  More desensitization and tonight he was able to stay with just the halter on. We can get up next to him pretty easy so no need for a drag line any longer!

April 1, 2014 – Day 1
Training Day 1

Lots of fun with Xcalibur tonight. He’s naturally a pretty quiet horse. Not overly reactive or flighty and really thinks about stuff!! Check out his video from his first training session where we worked on accepting touch, leading and even got him measured!

April 1, 2014 – Day 1 – Pickup

This guy was so cute and curious. Can’t fathom how he hasn’t found an adopter in the 3 years he’s been in holding! Coming right up to the truck to say hi and even followed us as we drove out to do the paperwork. Can’t wait to get started with him!!
