Quigly – Adopted

Posted by in .

Quigly is a 6 yo BLM mustang pinto gelding. He is a solid 15 hands tall! Quigly is a pinto gelding and was captured from Fish Lake Valley HMA in Nevada in August of 2013. Quigly is not broke to ride although with training she should make a very nice riding horse. Quigly has been Adopted!

March 4, 2014

Worked with Quigly again on approach and retreat. It took him a few minutes to settle and then he stood like a champion for all of my different approaches from different angles at different speeds. We did lots of halter practice, on and off, on and off. At the end of the night he was so good I feel comfortable that he can now be in his pen without the halter!

Worked with Quigly on lots of approach and retreat from all different angles. Did lots of grooming with the rubber mitt and was finally able to get some of the gunky stuff off the inside of his back legs. We worked on picking up feet and for the first time picked up both back feet! He wasn’t keen on holding them up for too long but he didn’t kick out or do anything silly. Great progress!

Quigly had some visitors today and we are happy to announce he is adoption pending!

February 25, 2014 – Day 8

The evening session for Quigly started off with a longer session of approach and retreat than I had planned. That’s OK, baby steps. From there we worked on feet handling again with the front feet. I also worked on teaching him to lead by both front feet, a step I had skipped since he picked up both feet very willingly. He was VERY upset about having to lead by his right front. Stamping his feet and striking in protest. With patience and consistency he was leading very nicely after about 15 minutes. He’s such a smart boy!

February 24, 2014 – Day 7
Training Day 6 for Quigly went really well. I groomed him all over his body (except his legs) with the curry mitt for a good half hour. No issues there! Then we worked on picking up feet. Within three tries for each front foot he had it! Next session we’ll review and try the back!

Quigly and I also worked on lots of approach and retreat. Quigly is now able to be in his pen without his halter! He’s such a good boy and a little bit of a goof ball. While I was working my other TIP horse, Peaches, Quigly had finished his dinner so he thought it would be GREAT to toss his metal feeder around his stall, flipping it over, banging it against the pipe stall, standing in it etc! Luckily Peaches didn’t care but he sure was a crack up to watch…over 30 min he just played and played and played!

February 23, 2014 – Day 6

Today, training day 5, was a pretty easy day for Quigly. He spent a couple hours tied to a fence learning patience. We used our Tie Blocker tie ring at first and then transitioned him to tying hard and fast to the post. He did very well!

February 22, 2014 – Day 5

Quite the productive day for Quigly. He led out of his stall for the very first time! He was very good. He also went through the obstacle course for the first time. Considering this was his first day out of his stall…and only his 4th day of training, he was excellent! He was able to accomplish a lot of the obstacles. We didn’t push it by asking him under the car washes but he did the mattress, pool noodles, step overs and bridge.

February 21, 2014 – Day 4

No work with Quigly this AM but did get a quick picture and video for your viewing pleasure!

February 20, 2014 – Day 3

Worked with Quigly reviewing leading and desensitization lessons. He’s nice and soft on the line, still allowing me to approach him on both sides. I was able to brush him on both sides to his hip. Would have gone farther but didn’t want to push my luck in the dark. Introduced him to the measuring stick. On level ground he’s exactly 15 hands! Good sized boy for sure. Built really nice! Quigly is probably ready to lead outside his stall so we’ll be working on that very soon!

February 19, 2014 – Day 2

Quigly had no problem with me cleaning his stall this AM. A few snorts at the cart and that was it. He was even greeting me at the front waiting patiently for his breakfast! Can’t wait to work with him this evening.

Evening session went VERY well for Quigly. He finally let me approach and pet him on both shoulders. I introduced him to the plastic bag. That was a non-issue even all the way down his legs. Never bolted, kicked or struck out at it. Just stood and snorted! Started to introduce the saddle pad and while he did OK he was really worried about it (didn’t move a muscle). At night I currently have VERY little light in his stall so I’ll give him an honest opportunity when he can SEE what it is I am throwing at him! Quigly was fine with the fly spray, fine with the brush. He has a nice long mane! Overall great session with him this evening. Here are some pictures!

February 18, 2014 – Day 1

Quigly is a great gelding. Naturally quiet but standoffish. The first day went GREAT! I am very happy with him! He’s not a spooky horse and really thinks about the situation when something bothers him. Even though he still isn’t sure about me he allows me to touch him with the stick and string ALL over his body including his legs. He never once offered to kick or strike. This gelding is a nice size is going to make somebody a nice riding horse!
