Rachel

Rachel is a 3yo dun mare gathered who was born in a facility. This pretty mare is in training as part of the Trainer Incentive Program. She will lead, load and pick up all four feet before she goes home. She is NOT trained to ride but should make an excellent trail horse with additional training.

Rachel is coming along very nicely. Here is a video of us reviewing some of the stuff she has learned.

December 9, 2015

Lots of great progress with Rachel tonight. We started with review of turning to the inside and facing up. We also reviewed being touched with the lash. She was still having difficulty with that so I decided to throw a soft rope on her to start teaching her to give to pressure in preparation for haltering and leading. She gave easily to the pressure and I was able to halter her without issue. I taught her how to yield left and right in response to the lead rope. She picked up on that very quickly and was even able to go for a walk in the arena. Once she understood yielding to pressure I was able to work with her on the lash touching her. If she’d go to walk off I would ask her to yield and face me. This really helped her understand the concept of standing still while the lash touched her. We ended on a very positive note.

December 7 & 8, 2015 – Off

December 6, 2015

Worked with Rachel on desensitizing to the lash of the lunge whip and turning to the inside. Today she was still very worried about the lunge line lash touching her and it took her quite a while to settle to the point where I could throw it up on her back and have her only think about leaving instead of actually walking or trotting off.

Worked with Rachel some more on turning to the inside. Started working with her with desensitizing to the lash of a lunge whip. She is surprisingly very worried about that. Not crashing around her pen or anything but can’t bear to stand still AND have the lash touching her.

December 3, 2015

Worked with Rachel on turning the inside and facing up. She isn’t worried about the human in her pen so tends to ignore you if you don’t have food. She LOVES carrots. Our lesson focused on maintaining her attention span on me instead of what is going on around her.

December 2, 2015 – Arrival Day
Today we just did a quick 3 min evaluation of Rachels temperament. She’s friendly, almost to a fault. LOVEs carrots and loves to be pet as long as you are OUTSIDE her pen. Inside her pen she’ll let you pet her but not for too long 😀 We’re very excited to be able to work with her.
