Venus

Posted by in .

Venus is a 4 yo BLM mustang mare. Venus is a 14.3h bay/ brown mare who reminds us A LOT of Raven. Venus was gathered from Chicago Valley HMA in California in October of 2010. Venus is not broke to ride although with training she should make a very nice riding horse. April 9, 2014 – Day 16

Venus had visitors this evening. She was very good and allowed strangers to take her on the obstacle course, lead her across the property. Then they practiced haltering her, picking up her feet and even measuring her. We are happy to announce Venus is now adoption pending!

April 8, 2014 – Day 15

Today Venus spent about an hour tied to the tie rail practicing patience! After that I introduced her to the saddle blanket, then the bareback pad, and finally the cinch. She had no problems at all and took the entire lesson in stride. Never even bucked. We finished by practicing feet.

April 5, 2014 – Day 12

Day 12 for Venus went really well. She had some stranger training / desensitization. She was very well behaved as they took her over the obstacle  course and even walked her back to her stall. Later in the afternoon we did some work with trailer loading. She’s a smart girl and followed us right in. Teaching her to send in was a little more complicated because she thought I wanted her to send around me and couldn’t figure out how to get there with the trailer in the way! She understood after a couple repetitions and was soon loading in and out very smoothly!

April 3, 2014 – Day 9
Training Day 8

Venus was tied at the tie rail again for a couple hours while I worked with other horses. She is doing very good with that! When it was her turn we worked with Venus on detangling that massive knot in her hair. We continued to work on picking up her front feet. We are happy to say that tonight she picked them up just fine!!

April 2, 2014 – Day 8
Training Day 7

Venus is now residing in a 12×16 pen because she’s so quiet to halter. I took her out of her pen and tied her up for about an hour while I worked with other horses. She did more pawing today than she has ever done but is very respectful of the tie rail and never set back once. When it was her turn for training we worked on feet. Picking up feet was very difficult for Venus. She really didn’t want to be standing on three legs and would pull her foot away (forward as to strike, and backwards as to stomp) pretty consistently so I wound up using a thick rope to teach her to lead by her front feet. We had a brief argument about that as well but once she understood the concept, follow the feel of the rope with your foot, she was soon easily and lightly leading by both front feet. I followed that by picking up the foot with the rope and then eventually my hand. All in all about 30 minutes and she was giving both front feet consistently.

March 31, 2014 – Day 6
Training Day 6

We have been implementing more “stranger” training into our routine. Today was Venus’ first encounter with Joe working with her while I was not there. Yesterday at the end of her training session her halter was removed. Today he said that she was very easy to approach from the right side but didn’t want to give him her left eye / left side so he could halter her. Of course, I don’t have this problem and I can’t train / fix a problem I am not having so he worked with her until she was confident with him on that side. Once she was haltered he tied her up for an hour or so. She never pulled back or pawed.

Later in the day she got loose out of her pen into the 50×50 square pen we have. Joe said she was easy to catch, walked right up to her and led her back to her stall by her BLM tag rope (which I have left on). Great training session for Venus!

March 30, 2014 – Day 5
Training Day 5

First day on the obstacle course for Venus. She really wasn’t sure what to do with the bridge so that took a bit of schooling. Slowly but surely we worked at it. Once she figured out the object was to step on it / over it the other obstacles were pretty easy! Today we took her over the bridge and mattress and then through the pool noodles. She wasn’t too concerned at all with the pool noodles which is a good thing! She also learned to tie today and got her first rinse off. All in all a good training day for Venus!

March 29, 2014 – Day 4
Training Day 4

Today was the first time we took Venus out of her stall. She was very hesitant to step over her stall door threshold. After that I had trouble getting her to lead up with me so rather than take her out onto the big property I schooled her in my 50 x 50 pen. First a little lunging left and right and then I used a lunge whip and the fence to encourage her to stay up next to me. After about 15 minutes of practicing leading in the smaller pen I felt she had a good idea of what I expected and we ventured outside. I’m happy to say that our walk around the property went very well! Can’t wait to get her on the obstacle course tomorrow.
March 28, 2014 – Day 3
Training Day 3

Another good day for Venus. This video shows start to finish our training session for the evening which involved approach and retreat with a burlap sack. Just five minutes.

March 27, 2014 – Day 2
Training Day 2

Another great session for Venus. We worked on leading which went very well. We also worked on approach and retreat until she was very comfortable with me walking up to her from the left side and stroking her neck / shoulder. Lots of desensitization with the carrot stick. I was also able to measure her with the height stick without issue. She is 14.3. Can’t wait for the weekend to get here so I can do some training in the daylight!

March 26, 2014 – Day 1
Training Day
1

This evening’s training session for Venus went well. She came up to the front of the pen to be pet so that was a good sign! My own mustang, Malibu won’t even do that yet and I’ve had her since August! She was offered a carrot but wasn’t sure what to do with it! Once in her pen she had some trouble making eye contact. She would rather not look at me most of the time so we worked on that. I also worked on approach and retreat . Nose touches were easy but she wasn’t keen on letting me get any closer. That’s OK! We WERE able to get a drag line on her today. The girls all arrived with only halters on and I personally feel having a drag line on them for a day or two really helps leading develop quicker so today she got a drag line. Next training session we’ll do more approach and retreat and maybe work on leading lessons!

March 26, 2014 – Day 1

Arrival day! So far Venus is a pretty quiet mare. She reminds us a lot of how Raven was on day 1. We’ll know more about her temperament once she settles in and we will work with her later this evening! Here are some pictures of Venus!!
