Xyron

Xyron is a 3yo grulla gelding gathered who was born at the facility. This gorgeous gelding is in training as part of the Trainer Incentive Program. He will lead, load and pick up all four feet before he goes home. He is NOT trained to ride but should make an excellent trail horse with additional training.  The adoption process is simple. I brought Xyron back up into a training pen today so that we can start working on his minimum requirements. Because he’s had a week off we took a few steps back and I had to remind him he needs to look at me regardless of what his buddies are doing. By the end of our training session he was focusing all his attention on me and following me around his pen. I am able to touch him no the left side all the way back to his hindquarters and on the right to his ribs. I also started working on touching his legs. He’s doing great! Hoping to get video of his next training session.

Another great training session for Xyron. He was immediately focused on me when I went into his pen and I was easily able to approach and pet him on both sides of his neck without issue. We worked on desensitization to the string all over his body. He was initially a little sensitive on his right hindquarter and right lower hind leg but soon settled down to accept the string all over without issue. He was so good to approach I have removed his dragline. He is being turned out in the big pen for a couple of days while I use his training stall to work with a different horse. We’ll see how he retains his lesson when we bring him back up into a training pen.

GREAT training session for Xyron. We were able to work on leading, petting both sides of his neck and lots of approach and retreat. He was much better about maintaining focus on me instead of looking for his friends.

Worked with Xyron on facing up and paying attention to me.

Took a couple of photos of Xyron in the turnout.

March 5, 2015 – Day 2

More review with Xyron today on turning to the inside. When I first went to work with him he could NOT focus on me. He was worried about what his buddies were doing in the arena. So we worked on lots of changes of direction and turns to the inside until he felt comfortable to stop off the fence and wait for me to ask him to do something else. Every time he’d stop off the fence I’d give him a carrot. If he’d lose focus I’d ask him to leave and start again. We worked on this for a little bit and finally he was able to let me approach him and rub him with the stick. I gave him more carrots and worked towards rubbing his face with my hand and the lead rope. He finally got to where I was able to snap the lead rope on to start teaching him to lead. I’m letting him drag the line tomorrow and we’ll start working on leading on Saturday.

This horse is funny because he isn’t scared of me or my stick and string at all. But he’s like a kid on the playground who’s not allowed to play. He keeps looking at his buddies worried about what is going on over there (not calling to them just staring) and not wanting to focus on me in his pen. We’ll work to help him build his focus. He IS just a baby after all!

March 4, 2015 – Arrival Day

Worked with Xyron today. Started with approach and retreat and started teaching him the basics of turning to the inside. He’s going to be tall. Probably around 15 hands right now and only 2 and a half. Looking for a big gelding with color, Xyron is your guy! He is going to be a dark grulla but is very sunbleached right now!
