Whinny

Whinny is a 4yo chestnut mare gathered from Fish Lake Valley in NV. Whinny is the dam to the BLM foal we took as a volunteer project earlier this year, Ruby. Ruby had such an exceptional temperament for a foal that we KNEW we wanted to work with Whinny. This beautiful mare is in training as part of the Trainer Incetive Program. She will lead, load and pick up all four feet before she goes home. Shee is NOT trained to ride but should make an excellent trail horse with additional training.  She has been adopted.

We brought Whinny back up to a stall so we can focus on her training. She was easy to lead and accepts contact over her body. We are starting to teach her to pick up her feet. We also measured her. She is 14.2 hands tall!

Because of the other horses being adoption pending I have turned Whinny back out in the group pen so that I can focus on getting horses home who have adopters. We’ll bring her back up for training on the weekend.

Continued to work with Whinny on facing up and accepting contact from the stick and string. I cut the video in the middle to spare you boring repetition but we just continued to work with putting the string on her back until she became comfortable with it.

March 15, 2015

Worked with Whinny today to get her more comfortable with the string over her back. She is still very consistently turning to the inside to face me and great at changing direction but still unsure about contact so she gets worried when the string touches her back. We ended on a good note where she was able to stand still with the string touching her.

Huge difference for Whinny tonight. She was calm and cool and easy to work. She was really consistent with her turns to the inside and hardly got worried at all. The only thing that bothered her a little bit was the string going over her back. We’ll work on that more tomorrow. Really happy with how nicely she calmed down from one day to the next.

Wow was Whinny a ball of fire to clean her pen this afternoon. It really worried her to have a human in her stall. Video will be uploaded. After her stall was clean, I worked with her some on turning to the inside instead of spinning. I was finally able to get consistent turns to the inside and Whinny got comfortable enough to settle and we were able to end on a positive note.

Sorted Whinny up to a training pen for evaluation / training tomorrow.

March 6-9 Off

Haven’t worked with Whinny yet but here are some pictures.

March 5, 2015 – Day 2

Didn’t work with Whinny at all today but when Beretta got her lead line snapped on and started to get worried about it dragging behind her Whinny stayed right with her for “moral support”. It was funny BOTH mares were trying to figure out what the lead rope was and why it was chasing Beretta. This carried on for a good 15 min and my husband and I both got a good laugh out of it.

March 4, 2015 – Arrival Day

Worked with Whinny for about five minutes just to evaluate her. She was worried but within a few minutes I was able to get her doing turns to the inside, and stopping while facing me. We ended our session on a good note after several times of her turning to the inside and looking at me while waiting for direction.
