Unity

Unity is a 4 yo BLM mustang mare. She stands 15h tall and may still be growing!! Unity is pretty bay and although she was born in a facility, her mother was gathered from Twin Peaks HMA in Nevada. Approximately 4 days after Unity arrived we discovered that she is a cribber. Cribbing is a vice and you can find more information about it in this ASPCA article on the subject Cribbing in Horses. While a cribber can lead a normal, healthy life, I have PERSONALLY seen horses pick the behavior up from being stabled in visual proximity to cribbers. I do believe only certain personality types are likely to try to learn or mimic the behavior.  Because we believe it can be learned by others we do not allow horses that exhibit this behavior on our property and returned Unity to the BLM facility at Ridgecrest. She is otherwise a very nice mare and is very trainable.

Internet Adoption Update

This mare (now 6 years old) is on the current BLM internet adoption. Her number is #2326. I have posted this blog so that potential adopters can have more information about her. I think she is an awesome horse and uncommonly beautiful. She has a gorgeous, feminine head with a body type all cowboys would look good on. She is a big, well conformed mare and the only reason I returned her to the facility is because she is a cribber. In training almost 80 BLM horses to date, she is the only one that ever came in with a vice. When I say cribbing, I’m not talking about wood chewing . She does grab the pipe and suck air.

Please keep in mind I am not interested in your opinion on cribbing or whether or not horses can learn it from one another. Many people have no issue with it. Try a cribbing collar, it might work. There is also a surgery for it. Many horses live a very long life as cribbers.

March 29, 2014 – Day 4
Training Day 4

Unity came out of her stall for the first time today and was excellent on the lead line! We were able to take her over various obstacles in our obstacle course. She’s a naturally brave horse and didn’t have any issues with any of the obstacles presented to her!

March 28, 2014 – Day 3
Training Day 3

Worked with Unity today again reinforcing leading in preparation for coming out of her stall tomorrow. We also worked on desensitization to various objects like a burlap sack and the carrot stick. Great training session for her. She handles new things well. This video shows the first time she was introduced to the burlap sack.

March 27, 2014 – Day 2
Training Day 2

Great first leading lesson for Unity today. She was really resistant at first, but after about 5 minutes she decided it was easier to just follow the pressure on the leadline instead of rearing up / running off. Once she understood the concept it was easy from there. She was leading very nicely left, right and forward by the end of our lesson. I also worked with Unity on approach and retreat. She did very well with me approaching to pet her on the left side. Next was the measuring stick. That was a  non-issue. This girl is 15h even and at just 4 years old is probably still growing!

March 26, 2014 – Day 1
Training Day 1

Great first day for Unity. She loves carrots and was pretty easy to bribe her to get close enough to snap the leadline on. I did some desensitization with her with the stick and string which went very well. We’ll let her wear the drag line and then start working with her on leading tomorrow!

Arrival day! So far Unity seems like she’ll be a quiet mare but we’ll know more once we get in and work with her later this evening! Here are some pictures of Unity!!
