Sugar

Sugar is a 4 yo BLM plain bay mustang mare. Sugar stands 14.3 hands tall and was born at Ridgecrest, CA holding facility. We do not know what herd her mother came from. Sugar is not broke to ride although with training she should make a very nice riding horse. Be sure to bookmark this page, like us on Facebook and subscribe on YouTube to ensure you have the most up to date information about Sugar’s training progress!!

We hand picked Sugar because of her naturally sweet personality. She was always coming up to the cart when we would go select horses. She seems to be naturally curious and brave and we look forward to learning more about her!

Internet Adoption Update

This mare (now 6 years old) is on the current BLM internet adoption. Her number is #3671. We don’t believe much was done with her while she was in her adoptive home and we also have no reason to believe she was ever mistreated. She was returned due to no fault of her own. She should pick up right back where she left off as shown here pretty easily. We always thought this mare might be gaited but we are no expert in that field. She has an interesting way of trotting. She looks like she would be very comfortable to ride. Be sure and check out the video on the internet adoption page.

March 23 – Adoption Finalized. Sugar has gone home to a great new family!!

March 22 – Day 20

Trailer loading practice. Wasn’t even an issue for this brave girl!

March 17 – Day 15

Sugar spent about 2 hours at the railroad tie of patience tonight with Raven. She hasn’t ever set back but was very displeased with having to stand there. Initially she pawed quite a bit and then settled down nicely. Raven was first to go back to her stall which did NOT make Sugar happy. She started pawing again so we left her tied until she, once again, was standing quietly and then put her away for her dinner. In this photo Raven is in the foregound, sugar is in the background just after having tied them up.

March 15 – Day 13
We’ve been focusing on Raven’s training during the week since we know Sugar is good to go. Went in with her today and saddled her up for the first time. First with a bareback pad which didn’t phase her at all. Then with the saddle. At first she worried when the saddle came down on her withers but with repetition she got over it. Once she was comfortable with the saddle we went ahead and cinched her up. That went pretty easy to. She did get a little humpy for 30 – 45 seconds but never did buck or kick out. Kinda just jumped around like “Wow, this is weird” and then it was business as usual. Followed saddling with another great run through the obstacle course. All of this with no lunging, no workout before hand. She was great!! After we were all done we gave Sugar her first rinse off and tied her for the first time. She never set back and had no problem with the water!

March 8/9 – Day 6/7

Sugar was excellent on the obstacle course today! She is super confident and tackled all of the obstacles without any issue! Such a nice mare and going to make on heck of a trail horse! We had different people handle her throughout the weekend and she had zero issues with that!

March 6, 2014 – Day 4

Good lesson tonight for Sugar. Worked on leading and staying soft. Picked up both front feet with ease and worked on lateral flexion. This mare is ready to come out of her stall this weekend!
March 5, 2014 – Day 3

Sugar didn’t actually get any work today but boy is she a little attention hound. Reaching her head through, nibbling on Raven’s halter while I worked her / tried to get it switched out! Such a clown!

March 4, 2014 – Day 2

Didn’t work with Sugar last night. Spent about 5 min with her this morning. Pet on her, took her halter off and put it back on, and also measured her. She’s 14.3 and very laid back!

Sugar’s first training session went very well! We worked on leading and petting and even picked up both front feet. She’s not sure she WANTS to go where I tell her to go but she obliged me. I also introduced Sugar to the plastic bag. She had zero issues with it. She could care less with it touching her around her legs, belly, girl parts etc! This girl is sweet AND brave!

March 3, 2013 – Day 1

Haven’t worked with Sugar at all yet. She unloaded nicely and obliged us in her pen as we took pictures. Didn’t panic or worry at all! Can’t wait to get started with her!
