March 6, 2015 – Update

Pistachio was adopted out of state quite a while ago but transportation just didn’t work out. He is available again. He is one of the quietest, easy horses we have. He’s built nice and stout and definitely big enough for a man. He’s gentle, easy and ready to go home.
December 20, 2014 – Training Day 8

Worked with Pistachio on the obstacle course gain. He did good with that! After we were done I put him in with the burros to see how he and they would do. They were a little worried at first but after about an hour everybody was getting along just great. Pistachio never cared and did well with the little guys 😀

December 15, 2014 -Training Day 7

Worked with Pistachio on haltering and leading. Reviewed picking up all four feet and tying.

December 11 – 14 – OFF due to rain.

December 2-10 – Pistachio has been getting turnout but hasn’t had any real training mostly because we have been focused on the horses that need more work. We’re bringing him back up into the training barn tomorrow evening. He has had no problem being caught in a 12 x 24 stall (5′ tall) and we leave his halter on for turnout and he’s easy to catch back up. Good, easy going guy.

December 1, 2014 – Training Day 6

Worked with Pistachio on leading around outside in the dark. He was great. Didn’t spook at all even though visibility was low. He’s doing so well he has been moved to a 12 x 24′ 5′ high stall just like a “normal” horse. No need for 6′ panels for this guy!

November 30, 2014 – Off

November 29, 2014 – Training Day 5

Another trip out of the stall for Pistachio today. He even got to venture to the obstacle course for the first time and did great! He wasn’t sure about the bridge and kept trying to jump it. Overall he did really well. Nothing bothered him including the mattress, teeter bridge and step overs. Everything on the video was his first attempt except for the bridges. Most horses really snort at the mattress the first time, Pistachio not so much. Such a good little horse and excellent trail prospect. Video being uploaded.

November 27&28, 2014 – Off

November 26, 2014 – Training Day 4

Worked with Pistachio leading outside his pen. He just isn’t motivated enough to move in his 24×24 pen so we took him into the 50×50. There he still had sticky feet so we found that if I had Joe lead him and then I walked behind him with some encouragement he soon picked up the concept of leading. He’s doing great overall!

November 25, 2014 – Off

November 24, 2014 – Training Day 3

Worked with Pistachio on approach and retreat and more leading. He’s doing pretty good at that. Introduced him to a “flag” he was a little worried at first but soon realized it wasn’t hurting him and then never flinched at it again. Worked on touching his front legs all the way down to his hooves. All in all he did really great. He had a drag line on since Saturday so he could teach himself to give to pressure and until I was confident I can catch him. He’s giving to pressure reasonably well now and I’m sure I can catch him so tonight I took his drag line off.

November 23, 2014 – Training Day 2

Some more work with Pistachio today on approach and retreat and leading. Only worked with him for about 10 minutes. He’s doing great!

November 22, 2014 – Training Day 1

Pistachio is naturally more laid back than most mustangs we get in so today focused on establishing first contact. He’s not overly reactive but wasn’t excited about having me in his space. I was able to work with him and once I made initial contact, everything else seemed to go pretty easy from there. He learned a little bit about leading today and is starting to give left and right. He also learned about the spray bottle. I was able to tackle the mess that was his mane and, after about 30 – 45 minutes got it all detangled. I think he looks great don’t you!

Took a quick video before breakfast:

November 19, 2014 – Arrival Day

I didn’t work any of the horses that arrived today but I did take a couple of minutes with each to analyze their initial flight distance, personality and level of interest in me. Quincy definitely set himself apart as the quietest of the new bunch. Doesn’t want me to come close enough to touch him but not worried at all about me walking all around him, including behind him, about four feet away. Just because a horse is reactive at first does not ever mean it won’t get quiet, even quiet enough to be a kids horse for example, but it sure is nice when they start out this quiet!
