Oliver

Oliver is a 5yo ~15h Sorrel gelding gathered from Triple B HMA.This handsome gelding is in training as part of the Trainer Incentive Program. He will lead, load and pick up all four feet before he goes home. He is NOT trained to ride but should make an excellent trail horse with additional training.

Practicing Oliver on trailer loading before he goes home.

Cinched up Oliver for the first time today. He was very good especially considering it was his first day with the bareback pad AND first day being cinched up.

Practicing trailer loading with Oliver to get him used to a burro loading behind him. He did very well even though it was night!

Worked with Oliver to practice on the obstacle course again. He remembered all of the obstacles with no issues. Video coming soon!

Worked with Oliver focusing on approach and retreat with him turned towards the middle of the pen rather than hiding alongside the rail. He showed lots of improvement as he started to understand what was being asked of him. Every time he would step towards the rail I would ask him to turn back away into the center. Very productive session.

Oliver had his first trip to the obstacle course. Overall he’s been doing great. We’re glad that trade show season is over so we can focus on training again. For having almost two weeks off he remembers his lessons well!

August 24th – Update

Oliver is doing great for the few training sessions we have had. He is a little bit more shy than the other Triple B’s we have had but once you get up close to him he’s pretty good. We’ll work on approach and retreat to gain his confidence. Here is a quick video.

August 10, 2015 – Training Day 4

Worked with Oliver today in the big pen. He was staying fairly close to me when I was cleaning the arena and so I thought he might be responsive to a leading lesson inside the big pen. I was right. He even moves much more freely than he does in the smaller confines of his stall. I tried to push my luck in the larger area and approach him. He was uncertain and finally decided it was best if he left. I’ll have to work with him more on that in closer confines before he’s confident enough to allow me to approach in a bigger area. Really nice session.

August 5, 2015 – Training Day 2

Worked again with Oliver. More changing directions and worked with leading / yielding to pressure again. He isn’t very reactive so I usually wind up driving him a little bit to get him to walk off and then applying pressure to get him to yield. He is still wary about approach but we’ll work on that over time. Check out his video showing our whole training session!

August 4, 2015 – Training Day 1

Worked with Oliver this evening in his pen. Was able to get him to change directions to the inside. He was very quiet and had almost no reaction to the string going over his back and around his but / legs. He would walk off but he was mostly worried about me and not being touched. I was able to get a hold of his lead rope so we worked a little bit on yielding to the left and right in response to pressure on the line / halter. All in all we had a very good training session. I offered to feed him a carrot from outside his pen but he was not interested in approaching me to get it. Instead he stood at the opposite end of the pen watching me.
