January

18 – We have a horse (Pistachio) who needs to travel to New Mexico with two burros behind him. Usually we load burros up front and horses behind but this is a special case because the burros will be loaded last. Who better to help train Pistachio than Juliass. Video coming soon!

December

13 – Worked with Juliass today to refresh his memory on loading into a trailer. It was no trouble at all for him.

November

Juliass is not impressed with my advances. He’s much happier to see a person if they have carrots!

Just a couple of pics from the past few days.

August 13, 2014 – Update

We continue to work with Juliass a couple times a week. He is becoming more and more friendly each day. He will now come all the way up to the front of his stall consistently to say high and allow himself to be pet. This is a big difference from the days where he would hide in the back of his stall anytime you would walk by.

July 10, 2014 – Update

Juliass continues to have one on one attention. Here he is with Joe on a walk around the property.

June 5, 2014 – Update

We’ve moved Juliass into his own stall now so he can get some one on one attention and training!

May 29, 2014 – Update

Still working with Juliass. Here are some pictures from last nights training session. He’s still not sure about picking up his feet so we are continuing to work with him on it. We prefer when our donkeys are confident enough to let you handle their feet without being tied. He’s not quite there yet but we’ll keep working on it!

May 14, 2014

The focus for Juliass has been to get him friendly and leading. He is doing well. He is getting easier to halter when by himself and is leading very well. We have been working with him on picking up all four feet and he will pick them up but needs to kinda warm up to it so it takes a few tries at first and then he stands like a pro.

May 3, 2014 – Day 5

Juliass seems to be the odd one out in the group of four donkeys. He will often stand off by himself and when he does interact with the other donkeys they tend to kick at him and bite him. We think that some of that may be why he shows quite a bit of fear reaction. We started off using approach and retreat to get close to him. He still wasn’t sure so we used our sheepskin stick to rub him from a distance. From that he started to gain confidence and allowed us to approach on the left side and halter him. Once haltered we tied him and were able to work on approach and retreat from both sides until it was no issue using lots of carrots and positive reinforcement when he would allow us to approach he’d get a carrot and lots of love. From there we began teaching leading side to side. He got very good at leading left and right and circling so we’ll need to keep working with him before he will learn how to lead straight. All in all a very good lesson with Juliass today!

April 30, 2014 – Day 2
