Burro Adoption Program

In November of 2015 Family Horses was proud to be able to launch the Burro Incentive Project  in cooperation with the BLM. This nationwide program recruits trainers to train BLM burros just like we do and place them into qualified homes. As part of this program, trainers like us select wild burros from the BLM holding facility to gentle. They will train them and offer them to the public for the low adoption fee of $125. This adoption fee is exactly the same whether you get your burro via this program or from the BLM directly. Training

Minimum Training Requirements

The burros we train will generally meet a minimum level of training prior to being adopted into its their home. We will work with the burro until we are able to:

  • Halter the burro
  • Lead the burro
  • Pick up all four feet
  • Load and unload into a trailer

Adoption Requirementsadoptionbutton

The BLM has a complete list of adoption requirements on their website. For specific requirements for stall size and shelter for gentled BLM burros please contact the facility nearest you. For most of our adopters that would be the Ridgecrest corral at 800-951-8720

Adoption Process

Potential adopters should contact me directly via phone or e-mail with any questions you may have about the burro. I HIGHLY recommend you come see the burro, watch me interact with it, etc. This allows you and I to get to know one another and allows you to see the burro in action. Feel free to bring along your trainer or friend. Adopting a burro can be fun and rewarding but can also have its challenges.
Burros are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. I don’t “hold” burros. Once you have decided on the right burro (or burros!) for you I will help you take the next steps to get the adoption process started with the BLM. An adoption application will have to be filled out and mailed with the $125 adoption fee to the BLM office. Once they approve you, they will send you a Private Maintenance and Care Agreement for the burro. After I receive approval, I will release the burro to you.

Transportation Arrangements

Transportation is the responsibility of the adopter. All of my gentled burros can be transported commercially if necessary. They will load and unload quietly as part of their training. You can also pick up your burro. I can also transport your new burro for a fee to most southern California locations.
